  • (90% of this wine was raised in jarres): Healthy medium red. Very ripe aromas of black cherry, violet and licorice come across as distinctly darker and less aromatic than those of the 2016 version. Very dense and rich; in fact, unusually powerful for Clos Saint-Denis, conveying an impression of thick skins and serious tannins. I find this a bit tough today in its impression of almost bitter hard-rock minerality, and in need of extended cellaring. Magnien noted that the minerally terroirs like Chambolle-Musigny Borniques and the rocky Clos de la Roche and Cazetiers performed very well in 2015 but he considers Clos Saint-Denis more about elegance than strong minerality, adding that his clients virtually always prefer it to his Clos de la Roche in the early going. Still, I find this a bit tough and austere today, possibly due to an element of drought stress.
